Birds of Prey #108 [Spoilers]

I'm not sure when Gail Simone's run ends on this title; I'm looking forward to her work on Wonder Woman but I'll miss her here. (I also hope that WW has a strong supporting cast, because I think Simone is one of the better team writers out there and would hate to see that go to waste. :))

We get a brief farewell segment with the Secret Six, and a put-on-hold for the budding romance between Huntress and Catman. I'm sorry to see Harley (presumably) go, but I suppose she's a little high-profile for the Six anyway.

I was not sorry to see Kat go. For some reason I've not found her to be a compelling villain. That and she's plain annoying. Just not that fond of bureaucratic bad guys.

I liked the big group picture. Dang, that Barda is tall, isn't she?

On the whole I'm not sure that I like the book now as much as I did a few months ago. It could be the loss of Black Canary--although she wasn't my favorite of the group, she did bring something to the group dynamic that hasn't been replaced. Or it could have been the Spysmasher focus, because I did enjoy the book more when she wasn't "on screen."

Most interesting, probably, was the ending, where Oracle offers Misfit...a home? a family with the Birds? Misfit is a teenager but she's still a kid, so this could mean that, along with Dinah, Barbara is taking on something of a maternal role. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out. When you've got a young "ward" who you're feeding and clothing and giving support to, but you're also sending her into dangerous situations on a regular basis, "parental" doesn't really describe the relationship.

Just, you know, new writer? Keep Misfit around for a while, okay? My kids like her.
